OSHA Publishes Final Rule for Hazcom Standard Update
Written By: Atanu Das on Wednesday, June 5, 2024
OSHA's final rule updating the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) will align with Revision 7 of the UN's GHS Classification and Labelling of Chemicals System.
The goal of this update is to improve on the 2012 implementation which originally adopted Revision 3 of the UN GHS at that time. The updated rule will increase worker protections and aims to reduce chemical related illnesses and injuries with better label and SDS information. OSHA also hopes for better alignment with other federal agencies and Canada.
Some of the major changes include:
- Labeling provisions for small (3 ml and 100 ml) containers
- Use of concentration ranges for trade secret chemicals
- Addition of Desensitized Explosive Hazard Category
- Bulk shipment rules to coordinate with DOT
