Implementing OSHA's HazCom Standard in Small Businesses: Tips and Best Practices

  • Designate a HazCom coordinator: Appoint a dedicated employee to oversee the entire HazCom program. This person should be well-versed in OSHA regulations and have the authority to implement and enforce safety protocols.
  • Conduct a thorough chemical inventory: Create a comprehensive list of all hazardous chemicals present in the workplace. Update this list regularly as new chemicals are introduced or removed .

 

  • Utilize online resources for creating SDSs and labels: Take advantage of digital tools and databases to streamline the process of generating compliant Safety Data Sheets and labels. This can save time and ensure accuracy .

 

  • Implement regular safety meetings: Schedule frequent discussions about chemical hazards and proper handling procedures. These meetings can serve as refresher training and address any new safety concerns.

 

  • Develop a system for promptly obtaining SDSs for new chemicals: Establish a protocol to request and receive Safety Data Sheets from manufacturers or suppliers before new chemicals enter the workplace.

 

  • Create a process for reviewing and updating the written program: Set up a regular schedule, at least annually, to review and revise your HazCom program. This ensures it remains current with changing regulations and workplace conditions
