California Issues New Fact Sheets on Antimony Trioxide

Written By: Atanu Das on Monday, August 17, 2020

Antimony Trioxide is used in the the manufacture of some polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, which is used to make food and beverage containers.  These include ovenproof or microwavable plastic trays, as well as some plastic water bottles. It also added to some flame retardants to make them more effective in consumer products, including upholstered furniture, textiles, carpeting, plastics, and children’s products.

The chemical was banned by California in January 2020 for use in furniture if they contain more than 0.1% of flame retardants.
